Paprika is a recipe management app that lets you save recipes from websites, photos, or your own creations; organize them by category, tags, and ratings; and plan weekly meals with automatic grocery lists sorted by store aisle. To get started, download the app (available on iOS, Android, and web), create an account, and use the web clipper or share button to add recipes from any website or recipe app.

Free: bring your recipes with you. Paprika files import in one upload, Mealime favourites are rescued by name, and any recipe page saves from a link. The free plan keeps 10 recipes. Start your free recipe box →

Saving Recipes to Paprika

Paprika offers three main ways to capture recipes. The most convenient is the web clipper—a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. When you find a recipe online, click the Paprika icon and the app automatically extracts the title, ingredients list, instructions, cook time, yield, and photo. You can edit any field before saving.

On mobile, use the Share button. When you're viewing a recipe in a browser, recipe app, or news feed, tap Share and select Paprika. The same extraction happens, and the recipe lands in your library within seconds. Paprika's web clipper works on most recipe sites, food blogs, and magazine websites—though some sites use paywalls or unusual layouts that the clipper can't parse; in those cases, you can paste the text directly.

For recipes from books or magazines, photograph the page, then create a recipe card manually. Paprika's ingredient editor lets you type items one per line, with optional quantities and units (cups, tablespoons, grams, ounces). The app recognizes standard units, so the grocery list feature calculates accurate total quantities across all recipes in your meal plan.

Organizing Your Recipe Collection

Once you've saved 20, 50, or 200 recipes, organization becomes essential. Paprika sorts recipes into categories—Main Courses, Sides, Desserts, Breakfast—and you create custom categories to match your cooking style. Each recipe lives in one primary category, making it easy to browse by meal type.

Beyond categories, you can add multiple tags to each recipe: "vegetarian", "under 30 min", "one-pan", "weeknight", "freezer-friendly". These tags let you filter recipes by multiple criteria at once. For example, if you're tired and want a vegetarian meal under 30 minutes on a weeknight, you can filter by all three tags and see only recipes that match.

After cooking a recipe, rate it from one to five stars and add a brief note. These notes become invaluable later: "loved this on a Tuesday" or "use half the salt next time" or "kids' favorite". The ratings help you quickly spot your most trusted dishes when meal planning.

Photos are stored with every recipe. If you clipped from a website, Paprika captures the food photo. For book recipes, attach a photo of the page as a note. The photo gallery view lets you scroll through your library visually—often faster than reading titles when deciding what to cook.

Planning Meals for the Week

The Meal Plan section is where Paprika becomes a practical kitchen tool. Create a new meal plan, set your week's start date, then drag recipes from your library into breakfast, lunch, or dinner slots for each day. You can plan seven days, two weeks, a month, or a custom range.

If you're cooking for a household—partner, kids, guests—note how many servings the recipe makes and how many people you're feeding. Paprika scales ingredient quantities automatically when you generate the grocery list. If a recipe serves four and you're cooking for six, the app multiplies all ingredients by 1.5.

The weekly view shows all seven days at once. Tap any day to see details, swap recipes, or mark that you've cooked a meal. This history helps you avoid repeating the same dish too often and reminds you later what worked on a given weeknight.

Generating and Using Grocery Lists

Once your week is planned, click "Create Grocery List" and Paprika consolidates all ingredients from all recipes into a single list. The app groups items by category—Produce, Dairy, Meat, Pantry—sorted by aisle order.

You can customize the store layout once (aisle numbers and order for your regular supermarket, or use Paprika's default layout). Future lists automatically sort to that layout, saving time every shopping trip. Check off items as you shop, add extras by hand, and remove duplicates if an ingredient appears in multiple recipes.

Export the list to your phone's notes or email, or take a screenshot. Some users print lists; others use Paprika's mobile shopping mode, which shows items on a phone screen as they move through the store.

Exporting Your Recipe Library

Paprika stores recipes in the cloud, so your library is safe. But if you want to back up your collection, move it to another app, or create an archive, Paprika lets you export in its native format (.paprikarecipes files) or as HTML. The export includes all recipe details: ingredients, instructions, categories, tags, ratings, notes, and photos. You can export all recipes or specific categories.

The HTML export creates a viewable web page of all your recipes, useful as a read-only archive or shareable family cookbook. The .paprikarecipes format is Paprika's proprietary format, readable only by Paprika or by tools designed to import it. If you decide to try another app, Mealfolder and some other recipe apps can import .paprikarecipes files directly, so your full library—with all categories, ratings, notes, and photos—transfers in one step.

Paprika Across Devices

Paprika syncs across iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows, and the web. Add a recipe on your phone while out, and it appears on your computer within seconds. All devices share the same library, so you're never managing separate versions. The web version (paprikaapp.com) lets you manage recipes in any browser, which is useful when you're at someone else's home or on a public computer (log out when done).

Quick Tips to Use Paprika Effectively

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I share recipes with family members in Paprika?

Paprika doesn't have a shared library feature for household members. Each person creates their own account and library. You can share individual recipes as links or notes, or export your library and have someone import it. Some meal-planning apps offer shared accounts; for instance, Mealfolder's Household plan ($19.99/year for up to six people) gives everyone in the household access to the same recipes and meal plan.

What happens to my recipes if Paprika shuts down?

Paprika has been active since 2010 and remains a stable, established app. For extra security, export your recipes regularly to a .paprikarecipes file and store it on your computer or cloud storage. You can also photograph or screenshot your favorite recipes and save them in a folder. Many users maintain both—Paprika for active cooking and a backup file for long-term peace of mind.

Can I use Paprika if I have dietary restrictions or follow a specific diet?

Yes. Paprika doesn't enforce any dietary restrictions; you decide what you save. Tag recipes by your diet type—"vegetarian", "dairy-free", "gluten-free", "keto"—so you can filter by those tags when meal planning. Many users create separate categories for different diets to keep the library organized and make weekly planning faster.

Does Paprika cost money?

Paprika is free to download, but a paid account unlocks all features. Paid plans cost roughly $5–7/year depending on your region. Check Paprika's website or app store for current pricing. If you're looking for a free recipe and meal-planning app with no time limit, Mealfolder's free plan gives you 10 recipes and the current week at no cost, with paid plans starting at $12.99/year for unlimited recipes.
