Paprika Recipe App: Save, Organize, and Export Your Recipes
Paprika is a recipe organizer and meal planner available on iPhone, iPad, Android, and web. It lets you save recipes from any URL, organize them into custom collections, plan your meals for the week, and generate a grocery list sorted by ingredient type or aisle. Paprika supports a clean export format, so if you decide to switch apps, you can download your entire recipe collection and import it elsewhere.
What Is Paprika?
Paprika is a digital recipe box built for home cooks who want to collect recipes from around the web and keep them organized in one place. Instead of bookmarking recipes in your browser or screenshotting them into your phone's photo gallery, Paprika stores them with all the context: ingredients, instructions, cooking time, servings, photos, and any notes you add.
You add recipes by pasting a recipe URL into Paprika. The app fetches the content from the website, removes ads, pop-ups, and navigation clutter, and extracts just the recipe. Paprika also has a photo mode: point your phone camera at a cookbook page, photograph it, and attach the image to a recipe card alongside a typed-in ingredients list and instructions. Alternatively, type a recipe in manually if it's a family favorite or from a source Paprika can't scrape.
How Paprika Works: Key Features
Adding recipes: The most common method is pasting a recipe URL. Paprika's in-app browser navigates to the link, reads the HTML, identifies the ingredient list and method, and extracts them. Most mainstream recipe websites (AllRecipes, Serious Eats, BBC Good Food, Tasty, Bon Appétit) work this way. If a website's structure is unusual, Paprika may ask you to highlight the ingredient list and instructions manually. For recipes not available online—family heirlooms, magazine clippings, handwritten cards—you can type them in. The app also accepts a photo: photograph a cookbook page, and Paprika uses OCR to attempt text extraction (results depend on print quality).
Organizing: Recipes live in collections, which are folders you name (Breakfast, Dinner, Meal Prep, Date Night, Low-Carb, Budget Meals, etc.). Within each recipe, Paprika stores your personal rating (1–5 stars), color tags, a difficulty label, cooking time, servings, and a notes field where you can add tips or substitutions. Search is full-text: Paprika looks through recipe titles, ingredient names, and instructions.
Meal planning: Paprika includes a weekly planner. Select a week, then drag recipes onto the days. If you've planned Monday lunch (Chicken Stir-Fry) and Wednesday dinner (Stir-Fried Tofu), Paprika collects all ingredients from both meals into one grocery list. You can print the list, email it, or check off items on your phone as you shop.
Grocery list: The generated list can be sorted by aisle (if you've manually tagged each ingredient), by ingredient type (proteins, vegetables, pantry), or in the order ingredients appear in recipes. You can add custom items, remove duplicates, and adjust quantities.
Paprika Pricing and Availability
Paprika is $4.99 USD for iOS or Android—a one-time purchase with no monthly or yearly subscription required. The desktop web version (paprika.app) is included free with a mobile app purchase. A free lite version is available with a lower recipe storage cap and no cloud syncing.
For comparison, most competing recipe apps charge ongoing subscriptions:
- Mealfolder: Free (10 recipes, current week only) or $12.99 USD per year for Plus (unlimited recipes). A Household plan ($19.99/year) covers up to six family members sharing one recipe library.
- Mealime: Around $15–20 USD per month for premium features.
- AnyList: Free with limited features; paid plans around $3.99–4.99 USD per month or $34.99–39.99 USD per year.
- Plan to Eat: Typically $3–5 USD per month.

How to Export from Paprika
If you're switching apps or want a permanent backup, Paprika lets you download your entire recipe collection. Open Paprika on your computer (web at paprika.app or desktop app), navigate to Settings, and look for Backup or Export. Select all recipes or a specific collection, choose the format (.paprikarecipes file or HTML), and download to your computer. The exported file includes recipe text, photos, ratings, custom categories, and notes.
You can use this file to back it up to cloud storage, import into Paprika on another device later, or migrate to a different recipe app if it supports Paprika's format.
Switching from Paprika to Another App
If you're considering leaving Paprika, common reasons include wanting a subscription app with different features, needing a shared family library, or preferring automatic aisle sorting on grocery lists. The good news is that your recipes are portable.
To Mealfolder: Mealfolder's import tool directly accepts Paprika .paprikarecipes or HTML exports. Upload your file, and Mealfolder imports all recipes, photos, categories, ratings, and notes in minutes. If you've also been using Mealime (which shuts down October 21, 2026 with no export), Mealfolder offers a Mealime rescue: paste your favorite recipe names, and Mealfolder retrieves them from a database of all 3,291 public Mealime recipes, with photos included.
To AnyList: AnyList doesn't have a bulk import for Paprika files, so you'd need to manually add recipes or check whether AnyList recognizes your export format.
To Plan to Eat: Check their import tool to see whether it accepts Paprika exports. If not, export as HTML and add recipes one at a time through the web interface.
To BigOven, Yummly, or Recipe Keeper: Export from Paprika as HTML or .paprikarecipes. Check whether the destination app has an import function that recognizes this format. Otherwise, you may need to add recipes individually using the URL import or manual entry.
Paprika FAQ
Can Paprika sync my recipes across all my devices?
Yes. With the paid app, recipes sync automatically via your account. Add a recipe on your iPhone, and it appears on your iPad and Android phone within seconds. The web version (paprika.app) also syncs with mobile apps, so you can manage recipes on your computer.
Does Paprika work offline?
Yes. Recipes you've saved are stored locally on your device. You can view and search recipes in the grocery store or kitchen without an internet connection. Changes you make offline sync to the cloud when you're back online.
Can I share a recipe from Paprika with a friend or family member?
Paprika doesn't have a built-in share feature for individual recipes. You can screenshot a recipe and text it, copy the recipe text and email it, or export a collection and share the file. If you need a true shared household library, apps like Mealfolder's Household plan or AnyList's shared lists are more convenient.
What if I delete Paprika? Do I lose my recipes?
No. Your recipes are stored in Paprika's cloud and linked to your account. You can reinstall the app anytime and log in to retrieve them. To be extra safe, export your recipes as a .paprikarecipes file and save it to your computer as a permanent backup.
