Recipe scaler: double, halve or resize any recipe

Paste the ingredient list, tell it how many servings the recipe makes and how many you need. Every amount is multiplied and written back as a kitchen fraction, and spoon measures switch to the unit you would actually reach for.

  1. Paste the ingredients, one per line
  2. Enter the servings it makes
  3. Enter the servings you want, or press ½×, 2× or 3×
  4. Copy the scaled list

How the scaling works

The scale factor is the servings you want divided by the servings the recipe makes: a 4-serving recipe made for 6 is scaled by 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5. The number at the start of each line is multiplied by that factor. It understands whole numbers, decimals, fractions like 3/4, mixed numbers like 1 1/2, the fraction characters ½ and ¼, and ranges like 2-3. Lines that do not start with a number ("salt to taste") are left as they are.

The result is rounded to the nearest kitchen fraction (eighths and thirds) under 10, and to the nearest half above that. A tiny amount is never rounded down to nothing; the smallest it shows is ⅛.

How spoon and cup amounts are tidied

US kitchen measures convert exactly: 3 teaspoons make 1 tablespoon and 16 tablespoons make 1 cup. When "tidy" is on, the scaler moves an amount to the biggest of those units that still reads as a clean measure. Tripling 8 teaspoons of sugar gives 24 teaspoons, which is shown as ½ cup. Halving 1 tablespoon gives 1½ teaspoons. Five tablespoons stays five tablespoons, because ⅓ cup would be a rounded guess. Weights, cans and items you count (eggs, cloves) keep their own unit.

Questions

How do I double a recipe?

Enter the servings the recipe makes, then press 2×. Every amount doubles, and spoon measures move to bigger units where that reads more cleanly (8 tablespoons becomes ½ cup).

How do I cut a recipe in half?

Press ½×. Halved amounts are shown as kitchen fractions, so ¾ cup becomes ⅜ cup and 1 tablespoon becomes 1½ teaspoons.

Does it convert grams to cups?

No. Converting between weight and volume depends on the ingredient (a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of sugar), so the scaler keeps weights as weights. It only converts between teaspoons, tablespoons and cups, which is exact.

What happens to "salt to taste" or "1 (14 oz) can"?

Lines without a number at the start are left unchanged. For "1 (14 oz) can", only the leading count is scaled; the can size stays, so you know which can to buy.

Can it scale a whole recipe page?

Paste just the ingredient lines for the cleanest result. Mealfolder scales saved recipes from the recipe page itself, so the ingredients and the grocery list follow your chosen servings.
